What is Six Sigma?
|
|
Six Sigma is a business transformation philosophy that applies a continuous improvement program, thereby endeavouring to make all the processes of a business that have any impact on customer satisfaction, (almost) perfect.
Six Sigma always places the customer first (external or internal), and it is based on objective data in order to deliver better results and to increase quality and efficiency. It focuses on three main areas:
- Improving customer satisfaction
- Reducing the cycle time
- Reducing defects
To achieve this, Six Sigma uses two methodologies:
- DMAIC (define, measure, analyse, improve and control): The aim of this method is to improve the processes that already exist at a firm.
- DFSS (design for Six Sigma): This method is used to create products, services or processes while ensuring that the variables of cost, quality and performance remain established from the concept and design phase.
Six Sigma places special attention on an adequate
return of investment (ROI) in order to reach the desired quality levels, which will help us to establish the balance between the investment to make and the expected quality according to the criticality level of each process.
